About Us

Founded in 1991 in Moscow, the Iconography Studio of the Venerable Alipy of the Caves (St. Alipy Pechersky) is dedicated to the study and faithful development of the sacred Orthodox image—the Holy Icon. Our iconographers are united by a commitment to reveal the spiritual meaning of the icon through its canonical form and beauty. We hold that the icon is a testimony through which the Church speaks, teaches, and proclaims; and that truly authentic church art can be created only within the living tradition of the Church, rooted in the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Craftsmanship

We work with natural mineral pigments and time-honored techniques. Particular care is given to composition, drawing, and gilding so that every work is both liturgically appropriate and artistically convincing.

Feast Day October 4, 2025 (In commemoration of the deliverance of Moscow and all Russia from the Polish invasion in 1612) This image of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was painted in the Icon Painting Workshop in honor of St. Alipy of the Caves, Moscow. The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is one of the most venerated sacred images in the Orthodox Christian world. In iconographic tradition, it belongs to the type of Hodegetria (“She Who Shows the Way”) the Most Holy Theotokos is depicted half-length, her head gently inclined toward the Christ Child, whom she holds in her left arm. The Christ Child blesses with His right hand and holds a scroll in His left — a symbol of the Divine Word and Divine Wisdom. The gaze of the Mother of God, filled with peace, compassion, and quiet sorrow, embodies the distinctive spirit of the Kazan type — a union of maternal tenderness and profound spiritual contemplation. The painterly background of this icon is executed in soft heavenly-blue tones, imparting an atmosphere of lightness and celestial purity. The golden halos of the Theotokos and Christ are rendered according to canonical tradition, symbolizing the uncreated light of divine holiness. This artistic combination — the luminous blue background with radiant golden halos — is characteristic of the Russian iconographic school, creating a visual harmony between the heavenly and the earthly, and evoking the presence of the Kingdom of Heaven within the sacred image. The icon is painted using the traditional egg tempera technique on gesso (levkas), applied to a linden wood panel with a recessed border (kovcheg). Natural mineral pigments mixed with egg emulsion produce the soft tonal transitions and inner glow characteristic of ancient iconography. The maphorion and head veil of the Virgin are adorned with delicate gold highlights and ornamental patterns, carefully executed with reverence and precision. The icon can be created in various sizes upon request — from small domestic icons (20×25 cm) to large church or iconostasis panels (60×80 cm and larger). Each image is painted entirely by hand, in prayerful observance of the sacred canons, making every icon not only a work of art but also a true vessel of spiritual tradition.
